The Journal
First-person reflections on the discipline — anonymized, never explicit, always consensual. A window into what the practice actually feels like, week to week.
Entry One: The First Week
I expected the hardest part to be physical. It was not. The device itself, after the first two days, became almost background noise — a fact of the day rather than a struggle. What I had not expected was how loud my own mind would get without the usual outlet. Small frustrations at work landed harder. I noticed myself reaching for my phone more, needing something else to hold my attention.
The daily check-in helped more than I thought it would. Having to actually describe how the day went, out loud in a message rather than just in my head, made the whole thing feel less like a private test I was failing and more like something I was genuinely doing — with someone paying attention on the other end.
By day six, the mental noise had quieted. Not gone — I do not think it is supposed to go — but familiar, almost welcome. I understood, for the first time, why people describe this as a discipline rather than a device. The metal, or the silicone, or whatever tier someone starts on, is really just the visible part of something that is mostly happening somewhere else.
